"authentic according to the conditions of Muslim!" al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and al-Mundhirī affirmed it in "al-Targhīb" (2/162/20)! I say: this is a remarkable oversight by these scholars; for this ʿUbayd ibn al-Ṣabāḥ is al-Khazzāz, as mentioned in "al-Jarḥ," and he said: "I asked my father about him, and he said: weak in ḥadīth." Moreover, he is not among the narrators of Muslim, nor any of the remaining six [canonical ḥadīth collections]! Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (8/429). al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (5/262): "al-Ṭabarānī narrated it, and in it is ʿUbayd ibn al-Ṣabāḥ, who is weak." I say: but he has been followed up, as al-Walīd said: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to me from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb from ʿAlī ibn Rabāḥ from Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī: that a man said: O Messenger of Allāh! I want to buy a horse, which one should I buy? He said ... and mentioned it, except that he said: "a reddish-brown" instead of: "a black." And he added after "the right": "... or from the chestnut with this marking; you will gain and be safe." It was recorded by al-Dārimī (2/212). Ibn Lahīʿah is truthful and used as evidence, especially since one of the ʿAbādilah narrated it from him in an abridged form, as al-Ṭayālisī said in "his Musnad" (84/604): ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUqbah al-Ḥaḍramī from ʿAlī ibn Rabāḥ with it raised [to the Prophet] in the wording:
