a group: narrated to us by Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah from Kahmas al-Hilālī who said: I heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb say: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say... and he mentioned it. The addition was omitted from "al-Baḥr" and likewise from "Kashf al-Astār" (3/289/2764), and I retrieved it from "al-Musnad"; and it is with him in the wording: "then the second, then the third." al-Bazzār said: "We do not know Kahmas narrated from ʿUmar except this, and Kahmas has narrated one ḥadīth from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." I said: And this is a good isnād, and its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim; except for Ḥammād ibn Yazīd al-Baṣrī, who was deemed reliable by Ibn Ḥibbān, and a group narrated from him; as mentioned earlier in the isnād of al-Bazzār, and it appears to be from his statement, and we have previously named some of those who narrated from him in the extraction of the single ḥadīth that al-Bazzār referred to—number (2623), and we quoted there from al-Bazzār that he said: "There is no harm in him." al-Haythamī said in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (10/19): "It was narrated by al-Bazzār—and the wording is his—and he has with al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ": 'The best generation is the one I am in, then the second, then the third, then the fourth whom Allāh does not care about at all.'" I said: With Ibn Mājah is a portion of it, and the men of al-Bazzār are trustworthy, and among the men of al-Ṭabarānī is Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm, the master of the chapter (!) and I did not know him, and the rest of its men are trustworthy."
