Fudayk from Ibn Abī Ḥabībah from Zayd ibn Saʿd ... I said: This isnād is weak; Zayd ibn Saʿd is not mentioned in the books of men [i.e., biographical dictionaries]. And Ibn Abī Ḥabībah—whose name is Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Ḥabībah—is weak, as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." As for the statement of al-Haythamī (10/36): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and Zayd ibn Saʿd ibn Zayd al-Ashhalī is unknown to me, and the rest of the men are trustworthy"! It appears he adopted Aḥmad's opinion regarding (Ibn Abī Ḥabībah) that he is trustworthy! But relying on the opinion of those who weakened him—which is the majority—is preferable, especially since it aligns with the principle: (criticism takes precedence over praise), particularly as some have severely weakened him, including al-Dāraquṭnī who said about him: "abandoned." This is the view adopted by al-Dhahabī in "al-Kāshif." (Note): al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Iṣābah" provided a very brief biography of the Companion of this ḥadīth (Saʿd ibn Zayd al-Ashhalī), and he mentioned another part of a ḥadīth from him through another route, and he quoted al-Baghawī as saying: "I know of no other [ḥadīth] from him."
