I said: And al-Dhahabī did not mention him in "al-Mushtabih," nor did anyone else as far as I know, and I fear it may be a title for the father of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥawālah; for the ḥadīth came through another route from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr, more complete than this. Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said in "al-Maʿrifah" (2/288-289), and from him al-Bayhaqī in "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah" (6/327-328): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf narrated to us, saying: Yaḥyá ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us, saying: Abū ʿAlqamah Naṣr ibn ʿAlqamah narrated to me, referring the ḥadīth to Jubayr ibn Nufayr, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥawālah said: We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and we complained to him about our lack of clothing, poverty, and scarcity of resources. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Rejoice; for by Allāh! I fear for you more from abundance than from scarcity. By Allāh! This matter will remain among you until Allāh opens for you the lands of Persia, Rome, and Ḥimyar, and until you become three armies: an army in al-Shām, an army in Iraq, and an army in Yemen, and until a man is given a hundred and is dissatisfied with it." Ibn Ḥawālah said: I said: O Messenger of Allāh! And who can manage al-Shām, with the Romans of the horns there?! He said: "By Allāh! Allāh will surely open it for you, until a group of them with white shirts, their necks covered in armor, stand over the small black-shaven man, and whatever they are commanded, they will do it. And there are men there today for whom you are more insignificant in their eyes than lice on the backs of camels." Ibn Ḥawālah said: So I said: O Messenger of Allāh! Choose for me if that reaches me? He said: "I choose for you al-Shām; for it is Allāh's chosen land from His lands, and to it He gathers His chosen servants. O people of Yemen! You must go to al-Shām; for it is Allāh's chosen land from the land of al-Shām, behold..
