"peace be upon you is the greeting of the dead." He said: "O Messenger of Allāh! Advise me?" He said: ... and he mentioned it. Al-Nasāʾī said: "Sahm ibn al-Muʿtamir is not well-known." I said: Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (6/430) based on his principle of accrediting the unknown; for this Sahm was not narrated from except by ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥasan al-Jārī, the narrator of this ḥadīth from him. Therefore, al-Dhahabī indicated the weakness of this accreditation in "al-Kāshif" by saying: "He is accredited." Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Acceptable," meaning: when corroborated. I have found a strong corroborator for him, as Aḥmad said (3/482): Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, saying: Saʿīd al-Jarīrī narrated to us from Abū al-Salīl from Abū Tamīmah al-Hujaymī from a man of his people who said: I met the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on one of the roads of Medina, and he was wearing a cotton wrap with frayed edges. I said: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allāh!" He said: "Indeed, peace be upon you is the greeting of the dead." I said: He repeated it three times, then said: "Peace be upon you, peace be upon you" - twice or thrice. He said: I asked about the wrap; so I said: Where should I wrap it? He bent his back to the bone of his leg and said: "Wrap it here; if you refuse, then here lower than that; if you refuse, then here above the ankles, and if you refuse; indeed, Allāh does not love every arrogant boaster."
