and it is narrated from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar, raised [to the Prophet], with the wording: "Indeed, Allāh tests His servant with trials, anxiety, and distress until He leaves him as pure as refined silver from his sins." It was recorded by Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (1/169-170) through the route of Abū Samrah Aḥmad ibn Sālim ibn Khālid ibn Jābir ibn Samrah ... with his isnād from him. And he said: "This Aḥmad ibn Sālim is from Kūfah, not well-known, and he has strange ḥadīths." There is another route for the ḥadīth with a good isnād from Abū Hurayrah, previously extracted under number (2280). *******
(O people! Indeed, this ummah will be tested in their graves. When a person is buried and his companions depart from him, an angel comes to him with a mace in his hand and makes him sit up. He asks: What do you say about this man? If he is a believer, he will say: I testify that there is no deity but Allāh and that Muḥammad is His servant and messenger. The angel will say: You have spoken the truth. Then a door to the Fire will be opened for him, and it will be said: This would have been your abode had you disbelieved in your Lord; but as you have believed, this is your abode. Then a door to Paradise will be opened for him, and he will wish to go towards it, but it will be said to him: Remain! And his grave will be expanded for him. And if he is a disbeliever or a hypocrite, he will be asked: What do you say about this man? He will say: I do not know; I heard people saying something. The angel will say: You neither knew nor recited nor were guided! Then a door to Paradise will be opened for him, and it will be said: This would have been your abode had you believed in your Lord, but as you disbelieved, Allāh has replaced it for you with this. Then a door to the Fire will be opened for him, and he will be struck with a blow from the mace, which will be heard by all of Allāh's creation except for the two heavy creatures [humans and jinn]
