that it was not narrated from al-Waḍīn ibn ʿAṭāʾ except by Yaḥyá ibn Ḥamzah. I said: And he is trustworthy, from the men of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], and the rest of the men are trustworthy. As for al-Waḍīn and Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—who is the son of the daughter of Sharḥabīl—there is some discussion regarding their memory, but their ḥadīth does not fall below the level of ḥasan. Therefore, al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (4/79)—and he was followed by al-Haythamī (10/202)—: "al-Ṭabarānī narrated it with a ḥasan isnād." And it was narrated by al-Aṣbahānī in "al-Targhīb" (1/94/151) as a statement from al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, in which it is said: Then al-Fuḍayl wept and said: I ask Allāh to make us and you among those who do well in what remains. Its elevation was hidden from some of the later scholars, as Shaykh al-ʿAjlūnī mentioned it in "Kashf al-Khafāʾ," and said (2/225): "al-Najm said: I did not find it in the elevated ḥadīth, but al-Aṣbahānī narrated it in 'al-Targhīb' from al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ as his statement. And in its meaning is what was narrated by the two Shaykhs and Ibn Mājah from Ibn Masʿūd..." then he mentioned the ḥadīth that comes after this! And al-Dārimī narrated in the beginning of "his Sunan" (1/3-4) from another route from al-Waḍīn: that a man came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We were people of ignorance and idol worship, and we used to kill our children. I had a daughter, and when she grew up and was happy with my call when I called her, I called her one day, and she followed me. I passed by until I came to a well belonging to my family not far away. I took her by the hand and threw her into the well, and the last thing I heard from her was her saying:
