"O my father! O my father!" The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) wept until tears flowed from his eyes, and a man from among those sitting with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him, "You have saddened the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." He replied, "Stop, for he is being asked about what concerns him." Then he said to him, "Repeat your story to me," so he repeated it, and he wept until tears flowed from his eyes onto his beard. Then he said to him, "Indeed, Allāh has pardoned what was done in the times of ignorance, so begin anew with your deeds." This is supported by the ḥadīth of Ibn Masʿūd mentioned later: *******
يا أبتاه! يا أبتاه! فبكى رسول الله ﷺ -حتى وَكَفَ دمع عينيه، فقال له رجل من جلساء رسول الله- ﷺ: أحزنت رسول الله ﷺ -فقال له:"كف؛ فإنه يسأل عما أهمه ". ثم قال له: "أعد عليَّ حديثك "، فأعاده، فبكى حتى وَكَفَ الدمع من عينيه على لحيته، ثم قال له:"إن الله قد وضع عن الجاهلية ما عملوا، فاستأنف العمل ". ويشهد له حديث ابن مسعود الآتي: *******

"Whoever does good in Islam will not be held accountable for what they did in the pre-Islamic period, but whoever does evil in Islam will be held accountable for both the former and the latter." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (6921), Muslim (1/77-78), Abū ʿAwānah (1/71), al-Dārimī (1/3), Ibn Mājah (4242), al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (1/211), al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (9/123) and "al-Shuʿab" (1/57/23), ʿAbd al-Razzāq in "al-Muṣannaf" (10/454/19686), and Aḥmad (1/409 and 431) from the path of Manṣūr and al-Aʿmash from Abū Wāʾil from Ibn Masʿūd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: A man said, "O Messenger of Allāh! Will we be held accountable for what we did in the pre-Islamic period?" He said: ... and he mentioned it. *******
