I said: Abū ʿAwānah is trustworthy, among the narrators of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], and so are those above him; thus, it is a sound isnād except for the ʿanʿanah of al-Ḥasan—who is al-Baṣrī. However, it has been authentically reported as marfūʿ through other than his route, so there is no reason to consider it mawqūf; because the marfūʿ is an addition that must be accepted, especially since the one who reported it as mawqūf had become confused, and he is Saʿīd ibn Iyyās al-Jurayrī, who said: Ṭarīf Abū Tamīmah said: I witnessed Ṣafwān and Jundub and his companions while he was advising them, and they said: Did you hear from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? He said: I heard him say: "Whoever seeks to be heard, Allāh will make him heard on the Day of Resurrection." He said: "And whoever contends, Allāh will contend with him on the Day of Resurrection." They said: Advise us! He said: "The first thing to decay..." then he mentioned the ḥadīth briefly about the chicken and the gates of Paradise, with some rearrangement. Thus, it was narrated by al-Bukhārī (7152), and al-Bayhaqī in "Shuʿab al-Īmān" (5/54/5753).
