I said: This isnād is weak, as ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib had become confused. And ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb; the ḥāfiẓ said: "He is trustworthy and reliable, but he has some anomalies." I said: And he was followed up, as it was extracted by al-Ḥākim (3/206), al-Bazzār (3/256/2697), Ibn Abī Shaybah (12/142-143), and Ibn Saʿd (3/433) through the route of Ibn Faḍl from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib with it; and its wording is: "Saʿd was embraced in the grave with a squeeze, so I supplicated to Allāh to relieve him." And al-Ḥākim said: "The isnād is authentic." And al-Dhahabī agreed with him! This is one of their errors; for the confusion of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib is established among the scholars, and al-Dhahabī himself mentioned that in his biography in "al-Mīzān," and that those who narrated from him in his early years; his ḥadīth is authentic, and neither ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb nor Muḥammad ibn Faḍl are among them, and therefore the ḥadīth is weak due to his confusion; especially since the ḥadīths about the squeezing of the grave on Saʿd are numerous; al-Suyūṭī mentioned a group of them in "Sharḥ al-Ṣudūr" (p. 44-45), and none of them contain: "So I asked Allāh to lighten it for him" or: "So I supplicated to Allāh to relieve him"; with also noting the difference between "lighten" and "relieve."
