when he went to leave, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "O ʿAbbās! Hold him at the narrow part of the valley by the mountain pass so that the soldiers of Allāh may pass by him and he can see them." He said: "So I went out with him and detained him where the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded me to detain him." He said: "The tribes passed by him with their banners, and whenever a tribe passed, he would ask: 'Who are these?' I would say: '(Sulaym),' and he would say: 'What do I have to do with (Sulaym)?' Then another tribe would pass, and he would ask: 'Who are these?' I would say: '(Muzaynah),' and he would say: 'What do I have to do with (Muzaynah)?' This continued until the tribes had passed; no tribe passed except he asked: 'Who are these?' I would say: 'The sons of so-and-so,' and he would say: 'What do I have to do with the sons of so-and-so?'" until the Messenger of Allāh passed by in his green battalion, which included the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, and nothing could be seen of them except their eyes [through the armor]. He said: "Glory be to Allāh! Who are these, O ʿAbbās?!" I said: "This is the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) with the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār." He said: "No one has any power against these, by Allāh, O Abū al-Faḍl! The kingdom of your nephew has indeed become great this morning!" I said: "O Abū Sufyān! It is prophethood." He said: "Then indeed it is." I said: "Hurry to your people." He said: "So he went out until he came to them; he shouted at the top of his voice: 'O people of Quraysh! This is Muḥammad who has come to you with what you cannot resist. Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe.'" His wife, Hind bint ʿUtbah, came to him and took hold of his mustache and said:
