take him to your tent, O ʿAbbās! When morning comes, bring him to me. So I took him to my tent, and he stayed with me overnight. When morning came, I brought him to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). When the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saw him, he said: "Woe to you, O Abū Sufyān! Hasn't the time come for you to know that there is no deity but Allāh?!" He said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how noble, patient, and kind you are! By Allāh, I thought that if there were any other deity with Allāh, it would have benefitted me in some way [by now]." He said: "Woe to you, O Abū Sufyān! Hasn't the time come for you to know that I am the Messenger of Allāh?!" He said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how patient, noble, and kind you are! By Allāh, there was something in my heart about this until now." ʿAbbās said: "Woe to you, O Abū Sufyān! Accept Islam and testify that there is no deity but Allāh and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh before your neck is struck." He then testified to the truth and accepted Islam. I said: "O Messenger of Allāh! Abū Sufyān is a man who loves pride, so grant him something." He said: "Yes, whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe, and whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the mosque is safe."
