I witnessed from al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad an event [on the day of Badr] [while he was on his horse], that I would prefer to be its companion over anything else; he came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) while he was supplicating against the polytheists, and said: [We] will not say [to you] as the people of Moses said [to Moses]: "Go, you and your Lord, and fight [while we remain here seated]," but we will fight on your right, on your left, in front of you, and behind you! I saw the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) his face brightened and he was pleased—meaning: by his words. In another narration: But proceed, and we are with you. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (7/287 and 8/273) — and the context is his, as well as the additions except the first and the other narration —, and al-Nasāʾī in "al-Sunan al-Kubrā" (6/333/11140) — he has the first addition and what follows, and he has only the other narration —, and Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (3/162) — with the first narration —, and likewise al-Ḥākim (3/349) — and he authenticated it —, and Aḥmad (1/390 and 428), and it was narrated by Ibn Jarīr (6/115) in brief. It has also been narrated that al-Miqdād (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said this on another occasion, as Saʿīd reported from Qatādah who said: It was mentioned to us that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to his Companions on the day of al-Ḥudaybiyyah when the polytheists prevented the sacrificial animals and obstructed them from their rituals: "I am going with the sacrificial animals to slaughter them at the House." So al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad said to him: By Allāh, we will not be like the leaders of the Children of Israel when they said to their prophet: "Go, you and your Lord, and fight, while we remain here seated," but go, you and your Lord, and fight, we are with you fighting. When the Companions of the Prophet of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) heard this, they followed suit. It was recorded by al-Ṭabarī: Bishr narrated to us, he said: Yazīd narrated to us, he said: Saʿīd narrated to us
شهدت من المقداد بن الأسود مشهداً [يوم بدر] [وهو على فرس له] ، لأن أكون صاحبه أحب إلي مما عُدل به؛ أتى النبي ﷺ وهو يدعو على المشركين، فقال: [إنا] لا نقول [لك] كما قال قوم موسى [لموسى] : (اذهب أنت وربك فقاتلا [إنا ههنا قاعدون] ) ، ولكنا نقاتل عن يمينك وعن شمالك، وبين يديك وخلفك! فرأيت النبي ﷺ أشرق وجهه وسره- يعني: قوله-. وفي رواية: ولكن امض ونحن معك. أخرجه البخاري (٧/٢٨٧ و٨/ ٢٧٣) - والسياق له، وكذا الزيادات إلا الأولى والرواية الأخرى-، والنسائي في "السنن الكبرى" (٦/٣٣٣/١١١٤٠) - وله الزيادة الأولى وما بعدها، وله الرواية الأخرى فقط-، وابن سعد في "الطبقات " (٣/١٦٢) - بالرواية الأولى-، وكذا الحاكم (٣/٣٤٩) - وصححه-، وأحمد (١/٣٩٠ و ٤٢٨) ، ورواه ابن جرير (٦/١١٥) باختصار. وقد روي أن المقداد ﵁ قال ذلك في مناسبة أخرى، فقال سعيد عن قتادة قال: ذكر لنا: أن رسول الله ﷺ قال لأصحابه يوم الحديبية حين صد المشركون الهدي، وحيل بينهم وبين مناسكهم: "إني ذاهب بالهدي، فناحره عند البيت ". فقال له المقداد بن الأسود: أما والله لا نكون كالملأ من بني إسرائيل إذ قالوا لنبيهم: (اذهب أنت وربك فقاتلا إنا ههنا قاعدون) ، ولكن اذهب أنت وربك فقاتلا، إنا معكم مقاتلون، فلما سمعها أصحاب نبي الله ﷺ تتابعوا على ذلك. أخرجه الطبري: حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد.
