"this ḥadīth was narrated by Ḥusayn ibn Ḥafṣ from Sufyān in "his Great Collection": from Muslim al-Juhanī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ... mursal, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated from al-Thawrī from Muslim al-Juhanī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." I said: And this is a sound mursal isnād; due to the agreement of the two trustworthy narrators on narrating it from al-Thawrī from Muslim al-Juhanī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá. And Muslim: he is Ibn Sālim al-Nahdī Abū Furwah al-Aṣghar al-Kūfī al-Juhanī, a trustworthy narrator from the men of the two Shaykhs. And Sufyān was corroborated; Abū Dāwūd said in "al-Marāsīl" (95/43): Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Furwah with it. The commentator on "al-Marāsīl" thought that this Abū Furwah is ʿUrwah ibn al-Ḥārith al-Hamdānī, who is Abū Furwah al-Akbar, and he is also a trustworthy narrator from the men of the two Shaykhs. He is excused in this assumption because he shared with Abū Furwah al-Aṣghar in narrating from Ibn Abī Laylá, and in the narration of al-Thawrī from him, but the narration of Ibn Abī Ḥātim, which includes (Muslim al-Juhanī), is what revealed the identity of this (Abū Furwah). Then Abū Yaḥyá al-Ḥammānī, who narrated it from al-Barāʾ; is criticized regarding his memory, although he is from the men of the two Shaykhs, and was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Maʿīn and others, while others weakened him. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "truthful but makes mistakes." Therefore, Abū Ḥātim preferred the mursal over his isnād from al-Barāʾ. but it seems he did not
