that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent Muʿādh to Yemen, and he said: O Messenger of Allāh! Advise me. He said: ... and he mentioned it. I said: And this isnād consists of trustworthy men, the men of the two Shaykhs; except for a weakness in the memory of Sharīk ibn ʿAbd Allāh—who is Ibn Abī Namr al-Madanī; al-Dhahabī said in "al-Mughnī": "Truthful." And al-Ḥāfiẓ added: "He makes mistakes." I said: But it is mursal; for ʿAṭāʾ did not meet Muʿādh, and therefore al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (4/75/14): "al-Ṭabarānī narrated it with a good isnād; except that ʿAṭāʾ did not meet Muʿādh, and al-Bayhaqī narrated it, inserting an unnamed man between them." And al-Haythamī summarized his words, saying in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (10/74): "al-Ṭabarānī narrated it, and its isnād is good!" I said: How good is it, as is apparent. As for the narration of al-Bayhaqī that al-Mundhirī referred to; I have not come across it now, but I have found two other paths with him from Muʿādh, both of which he included in "Kitāb al-Zuhd" (347-348), one of them being number (957) through the route of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥuwayrith from Muḥammad ibn Jubayr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent Muʿādh to Yemen, and when his departure was near, the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came to bid him farewell, and he said: O Messenger of Allāh!
