it has another chain; narrated by al-Naḍr ibn Muḥammad al-Jurashī: ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us from Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān from Abū Ḥāzim from Sahl ibn Saʿd, raised [to the Prophet], with the wording: "You will certainly follow the ways of those who were before you, span by span, and cubit by cubit, to the extent that if they entered a lizard's hole, you would follow them." We said: O Messenger of Allāh! [Do you mean] the Jews and the Christians? He said: "Who else but the Jews and the Christians?!" It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī (6/229/5943), and al-Rūyānī in his "Musnad" (folio 182/2). Al-Haythamī said—after the abridged wording of Aḥmad: "It was narrated by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī in a similar manner, with an addition..., and in the isnād of Aḥmad is Ibn Lahīʿah; and he is weak, and in the isnād of al-Ṭabarānī is Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān from Abū Ḥāzim, and I do not know him, but the rest of the narrators are trustworthy!" I said: There are two observations: the first: he missed the narration of Ibn Lahīʿah with al-Ṭabarānī in the first wording. The other: that Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān is mentioned in the three books: "Tārīkh al-Bukhārī," "al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl," and "Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān" among others; like "al-Ḍuʿafāʾ" by al-ʿUqaylī, and he mentioned this ḥadīth for him, and said (4/419): "This is narrated with a chain other than this one, from a source better than this." Al-Bukhārī said: "His ḥadīth is not established."
