al-Awzāʿī narrated it to us. It was also recorded by al-Ṭabarānī and Ibn Mandah in "al-Īmān" (2/372). Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (7/508-509), Ibn Mandah, and Ibn ʿAsākir also recorded it through other chains from al-Awzāʿī. There is a third chain through Ṣāliḥ ibn Jubayr; it was narrated by Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb from Marzūq ibn Nāfiʿ from him in an abbreviated form. It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī, al-Harawī, and Ibn Qāniʿ in the biography of Abū Jumʿah in "Muʿjam al-Ṣaḥābah," as well as by Ibn ʿAsākir. Its narrators are trustworthy, except for Marzūq ibn Nāfiʿ, who is only known through this narration, and Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (9/189). Ibn Mandah said after the narration of (Usayd): "This ḥadīth was narrated from Ṣāliḥ ibn Jubayr by Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, Marzūq ibn Nāfiʿ, and others, and this isnād is authentic and well-known." (Note): The narrations of the ḥadīth differed—as mentioned—regarding the Companions' question; was it phrased as "greater in reward," as in the narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ from Ṣāliḥ ibn Jubayr?
