- "What a terrible reward you have given her! This is not a vow; a vow is only what is intended for the sake of Allāh." This was said regarding the wife of Abū Dharr, who vowed: if she was saved from the disbelievers on his mount (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), she would sacrifice it! It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "Sunan" (10/75) through the chain of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather: that the wife of Abū Dharr came on (al-Qaṣwāʾ), the mount of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), until she knelt at the mosque, and said: "O Messenger of Allāh! I vowed that if Allāh saved me on it, I would eat from its liver and hump!" He said: ... and he mentioned it. I said: And this chain is good. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith is al-Makhzūmī Abū al-Ḥārith al-Madanī. The ḥāfiẓ said: "Truthful but has errors." And ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather: its chain is good, and it was used as evidence by Aḥmad, al-Bukhārī, al-Tirmidhī, and others. Scholars after them followed this in their compilations, and there is no regard for some of the novices related to this science who—due to their ignorance of the science of criticism and validation firstly, and their lack of trust in the knowledge of previous scholars secondly—deem the narrator weak due to a criticism said about him, even if it is outweighed.
