and among the injustices of the one named (Ḥassān) against the sunnah is his rejection of this ḥadīth! I have responded to him in the matter I am currently addressing, number (141), and mentioned there those among the imams who authenticated it, including the ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī. *
- (Yes, even if you are on a flowing river). It was narrated by Imām Aḥmad (2/221): Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us: Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us from Ḥiyy ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ: that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed by Saʿd while he was performing ablution, and said: "What is this extravagance, O Saʿd?!" He said: Is there extravagance in ablution?! He said: ... and he mentioned it. It was also narrated by Ibn Mājah (425): Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyá narrated to us: Qutaybah narrated it to him. I said: And this isnād is ḥasan; Ḥiyy ibn ʿAbd Allāh is disputed, but in my view, he is of moderate reliability in ḥadīth, and al-Tirmidhī deemed him ḥasan, while Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī, among others, authenticated him. I have also, in turn, deemed several ḥadīths ḥasan in the past; see, for example, "al-Mishkāt" (5931), "al-Ṣaḥīḥah" (1003 and 4301), and others. Ibn ʿAdī said about him (2/251): "I hope there is no harm in him if a trustworthy person narrates from him." I said: And this condition is self-evident, and it seems at first glance that it is not met here, due to the poor memory of Ibn Lahīʿah, which he was known for, even though he was truthful in himself. This is what led me—following others—to weaken the ḥadīth because of him in "Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl" (1/171/140) in the past, and in other references referring to it
