when it was the day of Khaybar; Abū Bakr took the banner, then ʿUmar, but it was not opened for them; and Maḥmūd ibn Maslamah was killed. It is reported by Aḥmad from Zayd ibn al-Ḥabbāb from al-Ḥusayn in a similar manner. I say: This benefit is not with Aḥmad, which is: "and Maḥmūd ibn Maslamah was killed." And Allāh knows best.

- (The wicked one spoke the truth. He means: the jinn in his statement: the verse of (al-Kursī) protects humans from the jinn). It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī in "ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" (533/960), Ibn Ḥibbān (1724), al-Ḥārith in "Zawāʾid" (Q 125/2), Abū al-Shaykh in "al-ʿAẓamah" (5/1650), Abū Nuʿaym in "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah" (p. 525), as well as al-Bayhaqī in "al-Dalāʾil" (7/108-109), and al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (4/462-463) through various chains from al-Awzāʿī who said: Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr narrated to us, saying: Ibn Ubayy informed me: that his father told him: they had a granary with dates, and his father used to check on it, and found it decreasing, so he guarded it, and there appeared a beginning resembling a young boy who had reached puberty, he said: I greeted him, and he returned the greeting, so I asked: Who are you, a jinn or a human? He said: A jinn! He said: Give me your hand, so he gave me his hand, and it was the hand of a dog with the fur of a dog. He said: Is this how the jinn are created? He said: The jinn know that there is none among them stronger than me. My father asked him: What drove you to do what you did? He said: We heard that you are a man who loves charity, so we wanted to partake of your food. My father asked: What protects us from you? He said: This verse: the verse of (al-Kursī). Then he went to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and informed him, and he said: ... and mentioned it. I said: And this is a connected chain of narration, continuously narrated, all its men are trustworthy; except Ibn Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, and Ubayy had three children: Muḥammad, al-Ṭufayl—after whom he was named—,
