ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: Are you not, O Marwān, the son of the accursed one whom the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) cursed, your father?! He said: ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā) heard them and said: O Marwān! Are you the one who said such and such to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān?! You lied! It was not revealed about him, but it was revealed about so-and-so. Then Marwān wept (!) and descended from the pulpit until he came to the door of her chamber, and he kept speaking to her until he left. I said: Ibn Kathīr remained silent about it, and it is a sound isnād. Al-Bukhārī included it in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (4827) with another isnād in a shortened form, and in it: Marwān said: Seize him! So he entered the house of ʿĀʾishah, and they could not capture him. And in it is ʿĀʾishah's disapproval of Marwān. Al-Nasāʾī included it in "al-Kubrā" (6/458-459) through a third route from the narration of Shuʿbah from Muḥammad ibn Ziyād who said: When Muʿāwiyah pledged allegiance to his son, Marwān said: The tradition of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar! ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr said: The tradition of Heraclius and Caesar! And in it, ʿĀʾishah said in response to Marwān: By Allāh, he lied! It is not about him, and if I wished to name the one about whom it was revealed, I would have named him, but the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) cursed [the father of] (1) Marwān, and Marwān was in his loins, a remnant (2) of Allāh's curse. I said: Its isnād is sound, and al-Ḥāfiẓ attributed it in "al-Fatḥ" (13/577) and al-Suyūṭī in "al-Durr" (6/41) to ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, Ibn al-Mundhir, and al-Ḥākim—who authenticated it—and Ibn Mardawayh
