"its isnād is authentic." He remained silent about it in "al-Siyar" (2/108) and did not attribute it to anyone! It was also narrated by Aḥmad (5/5): ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Ibn ʿUyaynah informed us from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid from al-Shaʿbī. This is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, as you can see. The other witness: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maʿn (who is Ibn Maghrāʾ) narrates: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid informed us from ʿAbd Allāh al-Bahī, the client of al-Zubayr, who said: I was in the mosque while Marwān was delivering a sermon, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr said: By Allāh! He did not appoint anyone from his family. Al-Bazzār said: "We do not know it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān except through this route." I say: Its isnād is good as al-Haythamī said, and al-Ḥāfiẓ confirmed it in "Mukhtaṣar al-Zawāʾid" (1/686). I have found a strong corroborator for Ibn Maghrāʾ, who is Yaḥyá ibn Zakarīyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah, and he narrated it in a more complete and clearer manner. It was narrated from him by Ibn Abī Ḥātim—as in "Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr" (4/159)—from ʿAbd Allāh al-Bahī who said: I was in the mosque when Marwān delivered a sermon and said: Indeed, Allāh, the Exalted, has shown the Commander of the Faithful a good opinion regarding (Yazīd) and that he should appoint him as successor, for Abū Bakr appointed ʿUmar—may Allāh be pleased with him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr—may Allāh be pleased with him—said: Is it a Heraclean act?! Indeed, Abū Bakr—may Allāh be pleased with him—did not appoint it to any of his children, nor to any of his family, and Muʿāwiyah did not appoint it except as a mercy and honor for his son!
