It was recorded by Muslim (9/153). The strange term1 - "I was commanded to a village..." Al-Khaṭīb said: "The meaning is that I was commanded to migrate to a village (that consumes other villages), meaning its people consume other villages, as Allāh said: 'And Allāh presents an example: a city which was safe and secure' (Sūrah An-Naḥl, 16:112), meaning a village whose people were secure. The mention of the village here is a metaphor for its people, and it is the people who are intended, not the village itself. The evidence for this is Allāh's saying: 'So Allāh made it taste the garment of hunger and fear for what they had done' (Sūrah An-Naḥl, 16:112), and the village does not act, and His saying: 'And it denied the favors of Allāh' (Sūrah An-Naḥl, 16:112), and the village does not disbelieve." 2 - "(that consumes other villages)" meaning it overpowers them, as Allāh said: 'Indeed, those who consume the property of orphans unjustly' (Sūrah An-Nisāʾ, 4:10), it does not mean that they eat it without being hidden from the orphans, nor is it eaten, and as Allāh said: 'And do not consume it wastefully and hastily, fearing that they will grow up' (Sūrah An-Nisāʾ, 4:6), meaning you overpower it wastefully against yourselves, and hastily fearing that they will grow up and establish proof against you with it and take it from you for themselves. So the consumption mentioned here is intended to mean overpowering something, and likewise in the ḥadīth."
أخرجه مسلم (٩ / ١٥٣). الغريب١ - أمرت بقرية ... قال الخطيب: "المعنى أمرت بالهجرة إلى قرية (تأكل القرى) أي يأكل أهلها القرى كما قال الله تعالى: (وضرب الله مثلا قرية كانت آمنة مطمئنة) يعني قرية كان أهلها مطمئنين، وكان ذكر القرية عن هذا كناية عن أهلها، وأهلها المرادون بها لا هي، والدليل على ذلك قوله تعالى" (فأذاقها الله لباس الجوع والخوف بما كانوا يصنعون) والقرية لا صنع لها، وقوله: (فكفرت بأنعم الله) والقرية لا كفر لها. ٢ - (تأكل القرى) بمعنى تقدر عليها، كقوله تعالى: (إن الذين يأكلون أموال اليتامى ظلما) ليس يعني بذلك أكلتها دون محتجبيها عن اليتامى، لا بأكل لها، وكقوله تعالى: (ولا تأكلوها إسرافا وبدارا أن يكبروا) يعني تغلبوا عليها إسرافا على أنفسكم، وبدارا أن يكبروا فيقيموا الحجة عليكم بها فينتزعوها منكم لأنفسهم، فكان الأكل فيما ذكرنا يراد به الغلبة على الشيء، فكذلك في الحديث".
