Its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]; except for this Shamīsah; al-Mizzī mentioned her in "al-Tahdhīb" and said: "Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj and Hishām ibn Ḥassān narrated from her." Then he cited this narration for her, and he did not mention any criticism or endorsement of her, and al-Ḥāfiẓ followed him, which is strange from both of them! This resulted from another peculiarity, which is that Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned her in "al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl" (2/1/391); and it was mistakenly recorded there as if she were a man; it states: "Shamīsah, Shuʿbah narrated from him." Then he narrated with his chain from ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd who said: I asked Yaḥyá ibn Maʿīn; I said: Shamīsah? He said: "Trustworthy." The esteemed editor commented on this by saying: "Shamīsah is a woman, so the correct wording is: 'narrated from her'... Neither al-Mizzī nor Ibn Ḥajar mentioned Ibn Maʿīn's endorsement of her, as if they did not find the author's mention of her in the names of men; a similar occurrence happened with 'Daqrah' as previously mentioned in the section of the letter Dāl." He also noted there (2/1/444) that the statement: "narrated from him" is an error from someone after the author; for he may rarely mention among the biographies of men some women, as in the end of the section of the letter Dhāl: "Dharrat, narrated from ʿĀʾishah..." And what supports the mentioned error is that Yazīd ibn al-Haytham narrated—in the part "From the Words of Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá ibn Maʿīn on Men," edited by Dr. Aḥmad Muḥammad Nūr Sayf—
