(By the One in Whose hand is my soul! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much. Then he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) departed and made the people weep, and Allāh revealed to him: O Muḥammad! Why do you make My servants despair? So the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) returned and said: Rejoice, be steadfast, and be moderate). It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (254), and al-Bayhaqī in "Shuʿab al-Īmān" (2/22/1058) through the route of al-Rabīʿ ibn Muslim al-Qurashī: Muḥammad ibn Ziyād narrated to us from Abū Hurayrah who said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came out to a group of his Companions who were laughing and talking, and he said: ... and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim. It was also recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān in "Ṣaḥīḥ" (1/162/113 and 285/359), and he said: "(Be steadfast) means: be steadfast in your actions. And steadfastness: adhering to the way of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and following his sunnah. And his saying: (Be moderate) means: do not impose upon yourselves more hardship than you can bear. (And rejoice); for you have Paradise if you adhere to my way in steadfastness and are moderate in your deeds."
