Al-Bayhaqī said following the ḥadīth: "In this is an indication that one's fear should not be such that it leads to despair and hopelessness from the mercy of Allāh, just as one's hope should not be such that it leads to feeling secure from the plan of Allāh or encourages disobedience to Allāh." The ḥadīth was narrated by Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Muḥammad ibn Ziyād who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: I heard Abū al-Qāsim say: ... and he mentioned the first part of it, and the last part of it: "Rejoice..." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/467). Then it was also recorded by him (2/257, 313, 418, 432, 453, 502), and by al-Bukhārī (6485, 6637), and through his route by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (10/26), Ibn Ḥibbān (7/519/5763), and al-Tirmidhī (4/231), and also by Ibn Ḥibbān (8/249/6671) from other routes from Abū Hurayrah with only the first part, and al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." Ibn Ḥibbān added in the second location through the route of Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ziyādī from Abū ʿUthmān from him: "Hypocrisy will appear, trust will be lifted, mercy will be withdrawn, the trustworthy will be accused, and the untrustworthy will be trusted, the black camels will kneel among you." They said: What are the black camels, O Messenger of Allāh?! He said: "Trials like the dark patches of night." Al-Ḥākim also recorded it (4/579), and said: "Its isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him!
