that Isḥāq said: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to me from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh who said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: ... and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is good, all its men are trustworthy, the men of the two Shaykhs; except for Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq who is the author of "al-Sīrah," and he is a mudallis, but he explicitly stated in the narration of Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ from him that it was a direct narration, and Yazīd is a reliable and firm narrator. This is a benefit I had not come across when I published the section on departure in the fourth volume of this series (1518), as I published it there from the narration of a group among them al-Ḥākim, who authenticated it and was agreed upon by al-Dhahabī. It is strange that the commentator on "Musnad Abī Yaʿlá"—who authenticated this isnād—did not notice the direct narration of Ibn Isḥāq in another place narrated by Abū Yaʿlá with number (2221) from him with ʿanʿanah, so the one referred to criticized it for ʿanʿanah! He should have pointed to his other narration coming in the "Musnad" explicitly stating it was a direct narration, but glory be to the One who never forgets. The second part of the ḥadīth has other routes from Jābir, some of which are in "the two Ṣaḥīḥs," and I have published them in "al-Irwāʾ" (1/80-81); so whoever wishes may refer to them. The first sentence of it has a corroborating narration from Abū Hurayrah, raised [to the Prophet] with the wording: "If you hear the braying of a donkey, the barking of a dog, and the crowing of a rooster at night; seek refuge with Allāh from the evil of Satan, for they see what you do not see." It was produced by Abū Yaʿlá in his "Musnad" (11/187/6296), and from him by Ibn al-Sunnī (307) through the route of Yaḥyá ibn Abī Sulaymān from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm from al-Aʿraj from him. I said: Its men are trustworthy; except for this Yaḥyá; he is weak, rather al-Bukhārī said: "He is munkar al-ḥadīth."
