and al-Aʿmash was followed by Manṣūr from Abū Wāʾil with it, and it includes the story of the spoils of Ḥunayn. It seems that Imām Aḥmad, may Allāh have mercy on him, followed the narration of ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdalah with the narration of Shuʿbah as a witness to the addition in his narration to confirm its authenticity. And Allāh knows best. Moreover, some narrators abbreviated the ḥadīth of the chapter in a way that was misleading, making it appear that his saying: "O Allāh, forgive..." was not something he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) narrated from that prophet, but rather something he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said intending his people. Muḥammad ibn Fulayḥ said: from Mūsá ibn ʿUqbah from al-Zuhrī from Sahl ibn Saʿd as a marfūʿ narration. It was recorded by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Āḥād wa-al-Mathānī" (4/123/2096), Abū Yūsuf al-Fasawī in "al-Maʿrifah" (1/338), Ibn Ḥibbān in "Ṣaḥīḥ" (2/160/969/al-Iḥsān), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (6/146/5694) through various routes from him. Similarly, it was narrated by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/164/1448). I say: its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of al-Bukhārī; however, there is some discussion about Muḥammad ibn Fulayḥ regarding his memory, as indicated by the ḥāfiẓ who said in "Taqrīb": "Truthful but makes mistakes." Then I saw what I had previously inferred explicitly in al-Bayhaqī's narration of the ḥadīth in "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah"; for he narrated it at length (3/206-215) in the story of the Battle of Uḥud, through the route of this Ibn Fulayḥ, but there was no mention of al-Zuhrī in its isnād. So it seems to me—and Allāh knows best—that this supplication from him (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) for his people is established; because there are several narrations regarding that, I will present what I have available of them:
