then I saw in "al-Jarḥ" (9/446): "Abū Maʿdān... from Yaḥyá ibn Maʿīn who said: Abū Maʿdān is reliable," and al-Muʿallimī commented in a way that suggests they are the same person. 3- The ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās, which has two chains from him: the first is narrated by Ibn Abī Laylá from al-Minhāl from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās, and from al-Ḥakam who raised it: that a man came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: "My mother has an obligation to free a believing slave, and I have a black non-Arab slave?" He said: "Bring her," and asked: "Do you testify that there is no deity but Allāh, and that I am the Messenger of Allāh?" She said: "Yes," he said: "Then free her." It was recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (11/20/10392), and in "Kitāb al-Īmān" (28/85 - in my verification): narrated to us by ʿAlī ibn Hāshim from Ibn Abī Laylā... Thus it appears in its isnād: "... from Ibn ʿAbbās, and from al-Ḥakam"! It is conjoined with al-Minhāl—who is Ibn ʿAmr—contrary to what might be initially understood, but such occurrences are frequent in isnāds, as known to those who practice this science. It was also narrated by al-Ṭabarānī (12/26-27) and "al-Awsaṭ" (2/36/2/5653) through the route of al-Ḥasan ibn Furāt al-Qazzāz: narrated to us by ʿAlī ibn Hāshim with it; except he said: "from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, and al-Ḥakam from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr..." This follows the standard, and he said: "No one narrated it from al-Minhāl and al-Ḥakam except Ibn Abī Laylā."
