It was also recorded by Ibn al-Sunnī (no. 736), and its narrators are trustworthy except for his teacher ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĀmir, whom I do not know. However, it is supported by the ḥadīth of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather, who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to teach us words to say at bedtime to ward off fear: In the name of Allāh, I seek refuge with the perfect words of Allāh..." the ḥadīth verbatim, and he added: "He said: ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr used to teach it to his children who were old enough to say it at bedtime, and for those who were too young to memorize it, he would write it down and hang it around their necks." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/239), al-Ḥākim (1/548), and Aḥmad (2/181) with this wording from authentic chains from Ibn Isḥāq. It was also narrated by al-Tirmidhī (4/266) through the route of Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq with the wording: "If any of you is frightened in sleep, let him say: I seek refuge with the perfect words of Allāh." The ḥadīth in its entirety with the addition. Similarly, it was recorded by Ibn al-Sunnī (745) through the route of Yūnus ibn Bukayr from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq. Then al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth." I say: However, Ibn Isḥāq is known for tadlīs, and he narrated it with ʿanʿanah in all the routes from him, and this addition is objectionable to me, as he is the only one who reported it. And Allāh knows best. In summary: the ḥadīth with this supporting narration is ḥasan, and al-Bukhārī mentioned it in "Afʿāl al-ʿIbād" (p. 88, Indian edition): Aḥmad ibn Khālid said, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated it with the wording of Ibn ʿAyyāsh.
