- "When you go to bed, say: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allāh from His anger and punishment, from the evil of His servants, from the whispers of the devils, and from their presence." It was recorded by Ibn al-Sunnī (no. 238) through the route of Abū Hishām al-Rifāʿī, who reported from Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ, who reported from Sufyān, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: "A man came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and complained to him about terrifying things he saw in his dreams, so he mentioned it." I say: This chain of narrators is reliable except for this Abū Hishām, whose name is Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Rifāʿī al-ʿAjlī. Al-Dhahabī said in "al-Ḍuʿafāʾ": "Al-Bukhārī said: I saw them unanimously agree on his weakness." ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah accused him of stealing ḥadīths from others and narrating them falsely. If that is the case, then perhaps the origin of the ḥadīth is what Musaddad narrated: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah reported from Ayyūb ibn Mūsá from Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyá ibn Ḥabān. "That Khālid ibn al-Walīd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) suffered from insomnia or was afflicted with sleeplessness, so he complained to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who instructed him to seek refuge at bedtime with the perfect words of Allāh..." the ḥadīth
