so Abū Bakr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) went to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and I followed him alone, reciting [the story] until he reached the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and related the incident as it had occurred. He raised his head to me and said: ... (and mentioned the ḥadīth) and added: [I said: May Allāh forgive you, O Abū Bakr!] He said: Abū Bakr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) turned away, weeping. The context is from al-Ṭabarānī, and the two additions are from Aḥmad. Its isnād is good, and al-Mubārak ibn Faḍālah is truthful but a mudallis. However, he explicitly stated hearing in all the chains from him, so we are safe from his tadlīs. Hence, al-Haythamī said (9/45): "Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and Aḥmad similarly in a long ḥadīth mentioned earlier in marriage, and it includes Mubārak ibn Faḍālah, and his ḥadīth is good." I said: And likewise, in an extended form: it was extracted by al-Ḥākim in "al-Nikāḥ" (2/173-174), and he said: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim!" al-Dhahabī refuted it by saying: "I said: Muslim did not rely on Mubārak."
