[O people!] Indeed, Allāh sent me to you, but you said: "You have lied," while Abū Bakr said: "He has spoken the truth." He supported me with himself and his wealth. Will you not leave my companion for me? (twice) He was not harmed after that. Narrated by al-Bukhārī (7/18/3661): Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid narrated to us: Zayd ibn Wāqid narrated from Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allāh from ʿĀʾidh Allāh Abū Idrīs from Abū al-Dardāʾ who said: I was sitting with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) when Abū Bakr approached, holding the edge of his garment until his knee was exposed. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "As for your companion, he has quarreled." He greeted and said: O Messenger of Allāh! There was something between me and Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, so I hastened to him, then regretted it, and asked him to forgive me, but he refused! So I came to you. He said: "May Allāh forgive you, O Abū Bakr! (three times)." Then ʿUmar regretted, so he went to Abū Bakr's house and asked: Is Abū Bakr here? They said: No, so he went to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Prophet's face changed until Abū Bakr felt compassion, so he knelt on his knees and said: O Messenger of Allāh! By Allāh! I was the one who wronged (twice), and the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: ... and he mentioned it. With this chain, it was also narrated by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Sunnah" (2/576/1223) in a shortened form without the story and without the phrase: "He was not harmed after that," but it includes the addition. It was also narrated by al-Bayhaqī (10/236) through another route from Hishām ibn ʿAmmār in its entirety, and it includes both additions: the first and the last. The ḥāfiẓ said regarding this last one (7/26): "I have not seen this addition from other than the narration of Hishām ibn ʿAmmār"!
