a poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three dates. She gave each of them a date and lifted one to her mouth to eat it. Her daughters asked her for it, so she split the date she intended to eat between them. I was impressed by her action, so I mentioned what she did to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he said: "Indeed, Allāh has obligated Paradise for her because of it, or He has freed her from the Fire because of it." It was recorded by Muslim, Aḥmad (6/92), and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (7/468). He was followed by Ṣaʿṣaʿah, the uncle of al-Aḥnaf, with a similar narration. It was narrated by Ibn Mājah (3668). There is a supporting narration from Umm Salamah, raised without the story, and its wording is: "Whoever spends on two daughters, or two sisters, or relatives, seeking reward for spending on them until Allāh enriches them from His bounty or suffices them; they will be a shield for him from the Fire." It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/293) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (23/392-393) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Makhzūmī from her. I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, except for Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd—who is al-Azraqī al-Anṣārī. The ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb"—following his teacher al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ" (8/157)—"weak." However, al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (3/84): "He was not abandoned, and some considered him reliable, and he does not harm in supporting narrations." It was also recorded by al-Bazzār (1890-Kashf) through another route from Anas that a woman entered upon ʿĀʾishah...". *
