al-Ḥasan ibn Sahl is Abū ʿAlī al-Juʿfī al-Kūfī. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (8/177) for his narration from Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar, and from him al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān and others. Abū Zurʿah also narrated from him as in "al-Jarḥ," and he only narrates from trustworthy sources, making him a strong supporter of al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥammād al-Ḥaḍramī. The second part of the ḥadīth is attributed in "al-Jāmiʿ" to Ibn al-Najjār, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī—mursal. Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated in "al-Muṣannaf" (10/450) through the chain of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib from Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jadali who said: Prophet Dāwūd (peace be upon him) used to say: O Allāh, I seek refuge in You from a neighbor whose eyes see me and whose heart watches over me; if he sees good, he conceals it, and if he sees evil, he spreads it! Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is mawqūf, not marfūʿ. *

(O Asad ibn Kurz! You will not enter Paradise by your deeds, but by the mercy of Allāh. [I said: Not even you, O Messenger of Allāh? He said:] Not even I, unless Allāh grants me His mercy or envelops me in His mercy.) It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/2/49) and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (1/334/1001) through two chains from Baqiyyah who said: Arṭāh ibn al-Mundhir al-Sakūnī narrated to me, he said: Muḥāṣir ibn Ḥabīb al-Zubaydī narrated to me from Asad ibn Kurz who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me... and he mentioned it; the context is from al-Bukhārī, and the additions are from al-Ṭabarānī
