indeed, O my Lord! This I will not ask You for anything else, and his Lord excuses him because He sees what he cannot bear, so He brings him closer to it. Then he hears the voices of the people of Paradise and says: O my Lord! Admit me into it. He says: O son of Adam! What will satisfy you? Would it please you if I gave you the world and the like of it with it? He said: O my Lord! Are You mocking me while You are the Lord of the worlds? Ibn Masʿūd laughed and said: Will you not ask me why I am laughing? They said: Why are you laughing? He said: From the laughter of the Lord of the worlds when he said: Are You mocking me while You are the Lord of the worlds? He says: I am not mocking you, but I am capable of whatever I will. - And in another narration: "capable" - (1). It was recorded by Muslim (1/119-120), Abū ʿAwānah (1/142-144), Ibn Ḥibbān (9/260/7387), Aḥmad (1/391-392 and 410-411), al-Ājurī in "al-Sharīʿah" (pp. 282-283), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (10/10/9775) - and the other narration is for these three, and the context is for Muslim - through various chains from Ḥammād ibn Salamah: narrated to us by Thābit from Anas from Ibn Masʿūd: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said ... and he mentioned it. It was also recorded by al-Shaykhān and others from another route from Ibn Masʿūd in a very abbreviated form, and it is included in "Mukhtaṣar al-Shamāʾil" (no. 197)
