(There were images in the Kaʿbah, so ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb ordered that they be erased. ʿUmar wetted a cloth and erased them with it. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) entered it, and there was nothing [of the images] left.) This was recorded by Aḥmad (3/396): [He said:] Sulaimān ibn Dāwūd narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us from Mūsá ibn ʿUqbah from Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir who said... and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is good according to the conditions of Muslim, and Abū al-Zubayr explicitly stated the narration and was followed up as will be mentioned; Aḥmad said (3/383): Rūḥ narrated to us: Ibn Jurayj narrated to us: Abū al-Zubayr informed me: that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say... and he mentioned it similarly. And this is a connected authentic isnād. Then it was also recorded by Aḥmad (3/335), and al-Bayhaqī in "Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah" (5/73) through two other routes from Ibn Jurayj with it. And Ibn Lahīʿah followed him: Abū al-Zubayr narrated to us with it. Aḥmad recorded it (3/336). And Wahb followed him from Jābir with it. Ibn Saʿd recorded it in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (2/142) with a good isnād from Wahb, who is Ibn Munabbih al-Yamānī, a trustworthy successor from the narrators of the two Shaykhs. And the ḥadīth has two brief supporting narrations: One of them is from Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah who said: I saw the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) wet a cloth while he was in the Kaʿbah, then he began to strike the images that were in it
