Abī Kathīr al-Baṣrī, the client of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Samurah, was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Ḥibbān (5/332) and al-ʿAjlī. A group of trustworthy individuals narrated from him, other than Qatādah, from the distinguished followers such as Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir, and Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī. Therefore, al-Ḥāfiẓ's ignorance is refuted when he said in "al-Tahdhīb": "ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq claimed, following Ibn Ḥazm, that he is unknown! Ibn al-Qaṭṭān countered this by citing al-ʿAjlī's authentication." Consequently, al-Ḥāfiẓ was not just when he said in "al-Taqrīb": "acceptable." Nor was al-Dhahabī when he said in "al-Kāshif": "authenticated"! Therefore, the correct view is that he is trustworthy, and this ḥadīth of his is authentic as stated in "al-Talkhīṣ," as will be mentioned. It is not detrimental that his Companion was not named, because all the Companions are considered just, as has been repeatedly mentioned. Moreover, he has been named, as ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ said: Hammad narrated to us from Qatādah from Kathīr ibn Abī Kathīr from [Abū] ʿIyāḍ from Abū Hurayrah, who said ... and he mentioned it without saying: "the gathering of the devil." It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (4/271), who said: "Its isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ is trustworthy, from the men of Muslim, and the chain to him is authentic
