thus he said! And Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīrah and Yaʿqūb ibn ʿAbd Allāh—who is al-Qummī—the ḥāfiẓ said in the biography of each of them: "Truthful but makes mistakes." And in their isnād is another flaw, which is the disconnection between ʿUthmān (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) and Ibn Abzá—whose name is Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzá al-Kūfī—Abū Zurʿah said: "His narration from ʿUthmān is mursal." Therefore, al-Dhahabī said in "Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ" (3/375) following the ḥadīth: "Aḥmad narrated it... and there is discussion about its isnād." And the ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr said in "al-Bidāyah" (8/339): "And this ḥadīth is very objectionable, and its isnād is weak, and this Yaʿqūb is al-Qummī and he has Shīʿah tendencies, and such a person’s solitary narration is not accepted. Assuming its authenticity, it is not about ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr; for he had commendable qualities, and his leadership was for Allāh ﷿, and then he was the imam after the death of Muʿāwiyah ibn Yazīd without a doubt, and he was more rightly guided than Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, who contested him after the consensus was reached upon him, and the pledge of allegiance was given to him across the regions, and the matter was settled for him. And Allāh knows best." However, the ḥadīth has come through another route from ʿUthmān (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), as Imām Aḥmad said (1/67): ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: al-Awzāʿī informed me from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān: that he narrated to him from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah: that he entered upon ʿUthmān (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) while he was besieged and said... and he mentioned his story, and in it is the statement of ʿUthmān: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say:
