Yūnus said: I used to see Ibn Shihāb do that when he went to his bed. ʿAbdullāh, who is Ibn al-Mubārak, corroborated him: Yūnus informed us with the wording: "When he fell ill, he would blow over himself with the (protective chapters) and wipe over himself with his hand. When he fell ill with the illness from which he passed away, I began to blow over him with the protective chapters he used to blow, and I would wipe with the Prophet's hand over him." It was also recorded by al-Bukhārī (4439). It was narrated by Muslim and Ibn Ḥibbān (6556) through another route from him. As for Mālik's narration, it is in "al-Muwaṭṭaʾ" (3/121) from Ibn Shihāb in a shortened form with the wording: "When he fell ill, he would recite over himself with the (protective chapters) and blow." She said: when his illness became severe, I would recite over him and wipe him with his right hand, hoping for its blessing. Through Mālik's route, it was recorded by al-Bukhārī (5016), Muslim (7/16), Abū Dāwūd (3902), al-Nasāʾī in "ʿAmal al-Yawm" (1009), Ibn Mājah (3528), and Aḥmad (6/104, 114, 181, 256, 263), all from Mālik. Among the apparent errors is the statement of the commentator on the ḥadīth of the chapter in the margin of "ʿAmal al-Nasāʾī": "And it was recorded by Muslim from Mālik's narration from Ibn Shihāb in a more complete form than this"! It is as if he means ʿĀʾishah's statement: "when his illness became severe..." This is contrary to what is understood from his statement: "in a more complete form than this," for the ḥadīth with al-Nasāʾī is in the supplications for sleep, and the ḥadīth of the chapter is more complete than it, as you see, and he also missed that it is with al-Bukhārī as well
