in his three narrations: "I asked ʿĀʾishah..." thus explicitly stating that he heard from her. This is the narration of Ibn Abī Shaybah, and Ibn Ḥibbān said: "Abū Nawfal's name is Muʿāwiyah ibn Muslim ibn Abī ʿAqrab, from the people of Basra." Al-Haythamī said about the ḥadīth in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (8/119): "Aḥmad narrated it, and its men are the men of (the authentic collections)." I say: It appeared in his version as: "ʿĀʾishah was asked" in the passive voice, which is likely a typographical error or from one of the copyists, as it contradicts the reality in the three places in "al-Musnad." The ḥadīth has a corroborating narration from Qatādah regarding the verse: (And We did not teach him poetry, nor is it befitting for him) (Sūrah Yā Sīn, 36:69). He said: It was said to ʿĀʾishah: Did the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) recite any poetry? She said: It was the most disliked speech to him, except that he would sometimes recite a line from the poetry of the brother of Banū Qays, but he would reverse its beginning and end. Abū Bakr said to him: It is not like that. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "By Allāh! I am not a poet, nor is it befitting for me." It was narrated by Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī in "al-Tafsīr" (23/19) with a sound chain from Qatādah, but he did not hear from ʿĀʾishah as Abū Ḥātim said, so it is mursal and disconnected. However, as a corroborating narration, it is acceptable. *
