if one of you sneezes and praises Allāh, it is incumbent upon every Muslim who hears him to respond with "may Allāh have mercy on you." This was recorded by al-Bukhārī in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" with the first narration, and in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" with the other narration. It is also referenced in "al-Irwāʾ" (779) from several other sources, and Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it (1/401/597). It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī in "al-Yawm wa-al-Laylah" (214 and 215), and by Ibn al-Sunnī (251). I said: This is an explicit text on the obligation of responding to the sneeze for everyone who hears the praise, making it an individual obligation. It is surprising that al-Ḥāfiẓ did not address this issue in his commentary on this ḥadīth in "al-Fatḥ" (10/607)!

- (the most disliked speech to him was poetry). This was recorded by al-Ṭayālisī in his "Musnad" (1490), and from him by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (10/245): al-Aswad ibn Shaybān narrated to us, saying: Abū Nawfal ibn Abī ʿAqrab narrated to us, saying: It was said to ʿĀʾishah: Was poetry recited in the presence of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? She said ... and he mentioned it. From this route, it was recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (8/722/6142), and by Aḥmad (6/134, 148, 188-189) through various chains from al-Aswad. Aḥmad added in a narration: "He liked comprehensive supplications and left what was between them." It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd and others, and authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī. It is included in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd" (1332), and its chain is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim as I have explained there. Aḥmad also added: "ʿĀʾishah said: When the righteous are mentioned, then welcome ʿUmar."
