he brought in his sheep and gave her the ring. She asked, "Who gave you this?" He replied, "A man." She then asked, "Where did you leave him?" He said, "In such and such a place." She remained silent until nightfall, then went out to him. When she reached him, he said to her, "Ride in front of me on his camel." She replied, "No; rather, you ride in front of me." So he rode, and she rode behind him until they arrived. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would say ... and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the conditions of the two shaykhs." Al-Dhahabī said: "I say: It is a strange report, and Yaḥyā is not strong." I say: He is al-Ghāfiqī al-Miṣrī, and there is a difference of opinion about him. The ḥāfiẓ has detailed the scholars' statements about him in "al-Tahdhīb" and in "Muqaddimat al-Fatḥ," then said (13/451): "I say: Al-Bukhārī used him as evidence in several ḥadīths from his narration from Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl. He has nothing else with him except his ḥadīth from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb regarding the description of prayer with the agreement of al-Layth and others, and the rest used him as evidence." He said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful, but he may err." I say: Someone like him is at least considered good in ḥadīth, unless his error becomes apparent. In the context of this story—despite its length—I did not find anything that necessitates judging the ḥadīth as strange, except perhaps his statement in the ḥadīth of the chapter: "Zaynab is the best of my daughters..." because it apparently contradicts his (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) statement during his illness: "O Fāṭimah! Are you not pleased to be the leader of the women of the believers?!"
