"A nation from the Children of Israel was lost; no one knows what happened to it. And I do not see it except as the mouse; [do you not see it] when camel milk is placed before it, it does not drink, but when sheep milk is placed before it, it drinks?" This was recorded by al-Bukhārī (3305); Muslim (8/226); Ibn Ḥibbān (6225 - al-Iḥsān); al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Mushkil al-Āthār" (4/277); Aḥmad (2/234); Abū Yaʿlá (10/6031); and al-Baghawī in "Sharḥ al-Sunnah" (10/200/3271) through the route of Khālid from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said... and he mentioned it. Hishām followed him from Muḥammad from Abū Hurayrah, who said: "The mouse is a transformation, and the sign of that is that sheep milk is placed before it..." the ḥadīth, and in it: "So Kaʿb said to him: Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? He said: Was the Torah revealed to me?!" Recorded by Muslim; Aḥmad (2/279, 411, 507); and Abū Yaʿlá in a shortened form (numbers 6060 and 6061). Ayyūb followed him from Muḥammad with it. Recorded by Aḥmad (2/289); and also by Abū Yaʿlá. Also followed by al-Ashʿath from Muḥammad with it in a raised, shortened form with the wording: "A nation from the nations was lost; Allāh knows best if it is the mouse or not! Do you not see that when camel milk is placed before it, it does not taste it?!" Recorded by Aḥmad (2/497)
