- Ibn Masʿūd addressed us and said: "How do you command me to recite according to the recitation of Zayd ibn Thābit after I have recited from the mouth of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) more than seventy sūrahs, while Zayd was among the young boys with two braids?!" It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (2/277): Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: Abū Shihāb narrated to us, saying: al-Aʿmash narrated from Abū Wāʾil, who said... and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is authentic; all its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Abū Shihāb's name is ʿAbd Rabbih ibn Nāfiʿ al-Kinānī al-Khayyāṭ, and Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān is al-Wāsiṭī, the ḥāfiẓ. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid followed him: Sulaymān al-Aʿmash narrated it without the first part of it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/411). I say: Its narrators are also trustworthy, the narrators of al-Bukhārī and Muslim; but they criticized the narration of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid—who is Ibn Ziyād—from al-Aʿmash specifically; however, his agreement with what others narrated from al-Aʿmash indicates that he preserved it. Al-Aʿmash has another isnād; ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān said: from him, from Abū Isḥāq, from Hubayrah ibn Yarīm, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd said: "According to whose recitation do you command me to recite? I have recited to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) more than seventy..." the ḥadīth.
