"a strange ḥadīth, uniquely narrated by Abū Muḍar al-Nājī, and it is said: his name is (Ḥammād), and no one narrated it from him except ʿUbayd." Ibn ʿAsākir said: "others besides al-Dāraqutnī named him (Shaybah), and al-Ḥākim Abū Aḥmad distinguished between (Abū Muḍar al-Nājī) and (Abū Muḍar Ḥammād), and he did not mention (al-Nājī), but rather named him." Then Ibn ʿAsākir narrated through another chain from ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid and said: (Abū Muḍar Shaybah al-Nājī). Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī also mentioned him among the teachers of ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid, and I did not find a biography for this Shaybah; unlike Ḥammād Abū Muḍar, for whom al-Bukhārī provided a brief biography, followed by Ibn Abī Ḥātim and al-Dūlābī (2/116); all three narrated only from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Khaffāf about him, and they did not mention any criticism or endorsement. The first two also provided a biography in "al-Kuná" for (Abū Muḍar) without naming him, narrating from al-Ḥasan and Ibn Sīrīn, and from him Sulaymān al-Jarmī al-Qāfalānī, and they also did not mention any criticism or endorsement. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" (7/665), so it is possible that he is this al-Nājī. And Allāh knows best. In summary, I have not determined the name of this (Abū Muḍar), nor have I clarified his condition, and the apparent defect of the ḥadīth is (ʿUbayd), the narrator from him. And Allāh knows best. However, the ḥadīth has a supporting narration from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim: it was recorded by Aḥmad (4/258), Ibn Ḥibbān (45/68), and others, and it is included in a ḥadīth in "Jilbāb al-Marʾah al-Muslimah" (p. 182), so it is at least ḥasan, if Allāh wills. *
