they said: Allāh is our Lord (and in Abū Yaʿlá: You are our Prophet! in secret and in public. He said ... and mentioned it. I said: Its narrators are trustworthy, except for al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUbayd, who is Abū Qudāmah al-Iyādī, the muʾadhdhin, and he is weak. Aḥmad said: "His ḥadīth is inconsistent." I said: This is evident in his narration of this ḥadīth, and for this reason, al-Dhahabī said in "al-Kāshif": "He is not strong, and Ibn Maʿīn weakened him." However, he was followed by Ghassān ibn Burzīn al-Ṭahawī: Thābit al-Bunānī narrated to us from Anas ibn Mālik who said: One day, the Companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went out and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We are doomed, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! He said: "What is that?" They said: Hypocrisy! Hypocrisy! He said: "Do you not testify that there is no deity but Allāh alone with no partner, and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger?" They said: Yes. He said: "That is not hypocrisy." Then they returned a second time and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We are doomed, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! He said: "And what is that?" They said: Hypocrisy! Hypocrisy! He said: "Do you not testify that there is no deity but Allāh, and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger?" They said: Yes. He said: "That is not hypocrisy." Then they returned a third time and said: O Messenger of Allāh! We are doomed, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah! He said: "What is that?"
