and let him treat people in the way he loves to be treated. Whoever pledges allegiance to an imam, giving him the handshake of his hand and the sincerity of his heart, let him obey him if he can. But if another comes to dispute with him, strike the neck of the latter." It was recorded by Muslim (6/18) with this wording, and by al-Nasāʾī (2/185), Ibn Mājah (2/466-467), and Aḥmad (2/191) through various chains from al-Aʿmash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Rabb al-Kaʿbah, who said: I entered the mosque and found ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ sitting in the shade of the Kaʿbah, with people gathered around him. I approached them and sat with him. He said: "We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on a journey. We stopped at a place, and some of us were fixing their tents, some were competing in archery, and some were tending to their animals. Then the caller of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) called out: 'The prayer is gathering.' So we gathered to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he said:" and he mentioned it. He added at the end: "I approached him and said to him: I adjure you by Allāh, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)? He pointed to his ears and his heart with his hands and said: My ears heard it, and my heart retained it. I said to him: This is your cousin Muʿāwiyah commanding us to consume our wealth among ourselves unjustly and to kill ourselves, while Allāh says: (O you who have believed, do not consume your wealth among yourselves unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allāh is to you ever Merciful) (Sūrah al-Nisāʾ, verse 29). He remained silent for a while, then said: Obey him in obedience to Allāh, and disobey him in disobedience to Allāh." This statement: "I said to him: This is your cousin..." etc., is not found in the narrations other than that of Muslim. Then it was also recorded by Aḥmad through the route of al-Shaʿbī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Rabb al-Kaʿbah with the same content, and similarly Muslim narrated it in a version but did not provide the wording of the ḥadīth, instead referring to the ḥadīth of al-Aʿmash
