and al-Walīd disagreed with them, saying: Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām informed us from Abū Salām al-Aswad with it. He did not mention Zayd ibn Salām between them. Ibn ʿAsākir also recorded it. There is no harm in this disagreement because al-Walīd—who is Ibn Muslim—is known for practicing tadlīs al-taswiyah, so it is possible that his omission of him between them is due to his tadlīs. It is also possible that he did not memorize it, and the one who memorizes is a proof against the one who does not, especially since his opponents are three trustworthy individuals. Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām was corroborated, as al-Ṭayālisī said in "Musnad" (263/1952 and 357/2735): Hishām narrated to us from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr, that Abū Salām narrated that al-Ḥakam ibn Mināʾ narrated that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās narrated that they heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say on the pulpit: and he mentioned it. From this chain, it was also recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (2/154), Aḥmad (1/239 and 335 and 2/84), Ibn ʿAsākir (5/230), and likewise Abū Yaʿlá (10/110-111) and from him Ibn Ḥibbān (4/197-198). This chain of transmission consists of trustworthy men, the men of Muslim, but its apparent form shows a break between Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr and Abū Salām, whose name is Mamṭūr. Some have inserted Zayd ibn Salām between them, as Aḥmad said (1/254): ʿAffān narrated to us, Abān al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us, Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr narrated from Zayd from Abū Salām from al-Ḥakam ibn Mināʾ with it. This chain appears connected, but Ibn ʿAsākir recorded it through Aḥmad with his mentioned chain, but he said: ".. from Zayd ibn Salām from al-Ḥakam..", so it was broken between Zayd and al-Ḥakam!
