when the verse of the veil was revealed, I went to enter as I used to, but the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me: "Stay back, my son!" It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/227 and 238), Abū Yaʿlá (4276), and from him by Ibn al-Sunnī (317), and also by al-Ṭaḥāwī, and Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (3/329). I said: Its isnād is weak, its narrators are trustworthy, except for Salm al-ʿAlawī, who is considered weak by al-Nasāʾī and others, not due to any accusation of dishonesty, but because of the scarcity of his ḥadīths, which does not allow for a judgment of reliability or weakness, as Ibn ʿAdī clarified at the end of his biography. Then he narrated with his authentic isnād from Ibn Maʿīn that he was asked about him, and he said: "Trustworthy." I have included a ḥadīth of his in "al-Ḍaʿīfah" (4255), but I have mentioned this ḥadīth here in "al-Ṣaḥīḥah" because it became clear to me that he preserved it, as it came from a source other than his. Abū ʿAwānah narrated from al-Jaʿd Abū ʿUthmān from Anas ibn Mālik who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me: "My son!" It was recorded by Muslim (6/177), Abū Dāwūd (4964), al-Tirmidhī (2833), Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (9/83/6608), Ibn Saʿd in "al-Ṭabaqāt" (7/20), Aḥmad (3/285), and al-Bayhaqī (10/200). Al-Jaʿd also narrated from Anas the story of his (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) marriage and the revelation of the verse of the veil: * (O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted...) * the verse, and at the end of it: "Al-Jaʿd said: Anas ibn Mālik said: I am the last of the people to have been with these verses, and the wives of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) were veiled."
